**The following are just suggestions or a guide. Please don’t feel like you HAVE to take all my suggestions. I get asked a lot about what looks good or what a child should wear, so here are a few things that I personally like to see, it’s not everything, but just a few things. :)
I’ve been saying that I was going to post What to Wear blog posts, and they haven’t been coming - probably because they aren’t the easiest posts to write. But, here is one, and I decided to start with my favorites - as in - my favorite things I like to photograph on children. Then I will move on to coordinating a family, planning your wardrobe based on location, and post random suggestions when I find them and if I have time to post them, and when the clothing stores come out with new styles. :)
FAV thing #1 = Layers
Outfits that coordinate and layer on are awesome. They bring depth and character into the photograph and are usually more comfortable on the child. It can be very simple, from a sweater over a shirt, to complex like the denim outfit below with the denim jumper over tights with a shirt underneath and sweater on top. They can also be as conservative or funky as you make them - different patterns matched together are bold and brave and I love to see that (look: last example)! Top these off with some very cute shoes and you have quite the outfit! *The below outfits are from Old Navy, Baby Gap, Children’s Place, and Matilda Jane.

FAV thing #2 = Colors
Instead of the solid colors of white or black or brown (not that there’s anything wrong with that, those colors look good in other times), go for some color! There’s nothing that screams childhood louder than bold and beautiful colors! These outfits are from Gap and Old Navy. Just to illustrate cute clothing in COLOR. And it doesn’t all have to be in color, but pops of color are great too on clothing. :)

FAV thing #3 = Hats
Hands down, probably my favorite of my favorite things to photograph are cute hats. From newborn to older children, a hat shows super personality and automatically adds fun to a picture. My favorite place to shop for hats is on Etsy (where creative individuals sell their handmade items), but often you can find awesome hats at speciality clothing stores and even the chain stores sometimes. :) One type of hat you want to avoid though are hats with a long brim (like a ball cap, sunhat, or cowboy hat) if you can, they can make some mean shadows on the face and eyes. But probably, if you show up with one (that’s fine!), we’ll do some pics with but not a whole lot. Here are just a limited amount of examples, you can find all these hats on etsy. I could post a million examples, but will stick to just four with a lot of self-control.

FAV thing #4 = Unique prints
If you can find them, unique prints are very cool in pictures. Dresses that have more than one print are beautiful too if you can find them. Again, a great place to find them is Etsy, and some designer online clothing stores, like Matilda Jane have them too. Here’s what I am talking about…these are from Etsy and Matilda Jane.

And that’s all I have (for now)! Remember these were just my favorite things, so this is alllllll opinionated. (LOL) If you hate these, then please don’t take my suggestions, after all, these pictures are for you to love and me to create. Just sometimes we all need a little help. :) And no, if you show up to your session not wearing these, I will definitely not turn you away - everyone has different taste - that’s what makes everyone unique and awesome.
As usual with anything, feel free to ask any questions - yall know I’m always here if you need help! Even if you show up to your session with the whole wardrobe (or maybe just half), we’ll pick what’s best and everything will be wonderful!
